Placing Your Ebenezer

The Israelites struggled as a fledgling people. The Tribes often were disjointed and sought parochial interests. As a result, the Philistines oppressed them. 1 Samuel 7 opens with Samuel calling for a solemn assembly of the people to worship, confess their selfishness and failure, and return to the LORD. When the Philistines heard of this gathering, they decided to launch a surprise attack. The LORD intervened and led the Israelites to a resounding victory. 1 Samuel 7:12, “Then Samuel took a stone and set it between Mizpah and Shen, and named it Ebenezer, saying, ‘Thus far the LORD has helped us’.”

Thus far, until now–God has helped us. The LORD remains in the business of helping us. What God has done for us in the past He is able to do going into the future. God’s person does not change. God’s promises remain true. God’s passion is constant. God’s program does not deviate; He wants to use persons to alleviate, to defy, suffering at all levels.

How I need reminded of this on a daily basis; that was the purpose of Ebenezer. Whenever an Israelite walked that road, one could see the stone and be reminded of divine faithfulness. The next generation could hear the story and place confidence in the LORD.

One more thing – God’s prescription is still the same. I simply ask, do you need a refill?
